Were you unable to make our info sessions? No need to panic! Our blog this week highlights everything you need to know about submitting work into the Sasol New Signatures Art Competition 2017.
Emerging artists who are 18 years or older who have not yet held a solo exhibition, except for academic purposes and are permanent residents in South Africa may participate in the competition.
All artist wanting to take part must sumit a completed and signed entry form with a copy of identity document OR Permit of Permanent Residence
A colour photograph of the work (for reference only), a Biography of no longer than 250 words and a conceptual statement/synopsis of no longer than 250 words with assembly, maintenance and disassembling instructions (if applicable) must be submitted alongside the entry form.
Artists may enter a maximum of two works.
The maximum size of a single entry is 250cm x 250cm x 250cm.
Entries in any medium may be entered.
The total weight of a work hanging on a wall may not exceed 30kg. A work hanging from the ceiling may not weigh more than 10kg. Should such a work consist of several parts, the total weight is limited to 10kg per square metre.
The weight of a work standing on the floor may not exceed 100kg. Should such a work consist of several parts, the total weight per piece is limited to 75kg.
The weight of a work standing on a plinth supplied by the organisers may not exceed 30kg.
Video/DVDs entries may be no longer than five minutes (300 seconds).
Should a Video/DVD form part of an installation, the artist is responsible for providing the required screening equipment, i.e. electrical plugs, extension cords, television monitors, Video/DVD players, computers, etc. Detailed instructions must be supplied. The artist must supply screening equipment for preliminary selection at the collection point.
If artworks contain images of anyone under 18, the artist must obtain the written consent of that child’s parent or guardian. Written consent must also be obtained from any individual’s aged 18 or over who are identifiable in an image. A model release is provided in the entry form for this purpose and must be submitted with the competition entry.
For performance art submissions, the artist must submit a completed entry form accompanied by a video recording of the performance and a detailed written proposal clearly outlining the concept of the performance. The proposal must include a floor plan with measurements, equipment used, duration, number of persons involved, illustrations, etc. The artist will be required to do the performance for regional selection at a collection point. The date and time of the performance will be arranged with the artist by the organisers.
All works entered into the competition must be for sale and may be purchased on the opening night of the exhibition only after Sasol has exercised its option to purchase.
Works must be no older than one year (completed after 29 June 2016) and may not have been entered into any other art competitions.
Final submission dates are Thursday 29 June 2017 and Friday 30 June 2017
