Meet our judges: Mary Sibande

This year’s judging panel comprises 6 eminent judges, including acclaimed local artist Mary Sibande.  We took the opportunity to meet up with her and discuss this year’s competition and the South African art landscape in general.

What role do you think SNS plays in the world of South African Art?

The SNS is an inspiring platform for young artists which can kickstart their professional careers.mJudging is a peer review process, so established professionals assist in visualizing the future prospects of entrants - in terms of their art as part of a discourse.

What are you looking forward to this year?

Each year presents a group of bright talent and I’m excited to review unique visual voices presenting work which is strong and self-reflective in character. I am hoping to be challenged about what I know about art.

Do artistic trends influence you?

I am not sympathetic to trends; I am more responsive to interesting and well-resolved ideas. I’m drawn to artists experimenting with ideas and finding appropriate mediums and methods to challenge their audience. 

What encouragement would you give to artists wanting to participate in the competition?

Speak from your belly with honesty and intelligence. Respect your own ideas and give them 100% focus. It is often very clear when an artwork has not been afforded the time and effort it deserves.
