Zyma Amien plans her first solo exhibition

Zyma Amien, winner 2016 plans her first solo exhibition “Paying Homage”

Being crowned the winner of the Sasol New Signatures Art Competition in 2016 has allowed Zyma Amien to extend her winning piece into her first solo exhibition, also titled “Paying Homage”. The solo exhibition forms part of her prize and will consist of 21 long gauze overalls with sewing machines placed at the end of the overalls. This installation will occupy a space of about 11 metres along the wall.

Along with the above, there will be 5 upright sewing machines with 7 metres of gauze. On the gauze she has stitched buttons, zips, stitching and overlocked patterns. This alludes to the task seamstresses perform on a daily basis. On the floor next each station, will be a heap of buttons and zips.

“This competition has given me the opportunity to highlight the problem of the garment and textile workers in a public space,” said Amien.

“To compliment the installation, I am also in the process of creating prints, etchings and embossing’s. The embossing’s will consist of buttons, zips and pins. My intention with the buttons is to visually show the alienation and loneliness the workers endure,“ added Amien

She also received prize money of R100 000.00 which she has used to create artworks the solo exhibition.

“By winning this competition, my career in the art world has been launched. I am extremely grateful to Sasol for investing in the arts and helping start the careers of emerging artists.  I would strongly encourage any artists wishing to be discovered to create work for Sasol New Signatures 2017” concluded Amien.

Contemporary, innovative and emerging artists wanting to “be discovered” are invited to submit their artworks at one of several collection points around the country between 10h00 and 16h00 on Thursday, 29 June 2017 and Friday, 30 June 2017.
