Did you know?

Liberty Charlotte Battson

Did you know? consists of two 180 x 150 cm paintings that are a combination of flat-coloured stripes, sprayed with 2K automotive paint. The paintings act as bar graphs, where the percentage that each colour covers on the canvas is calculated to represent the percentages used in 9 specific statistics.

The paintings depict a mixture of trivial and serious statistics obtained from various sources, with the aim of representing overexposed information in a novel way. To access the information in the painting, I have matched the colours representing the statistics with T-shirts of the same colour. Accompanying the paintings is a photograph of 9 people wearing the different T-shorts, which will be worn by the same models who will casually mingle in the crowd as spectators.

The title, Did you know?, suggests a game-like aspect that is intrinsic to the artwork. It plats on the idea of people being attracted to trivial or nonsensical statistics but bor4ed of numbers related to serious social concerns. This artwork also explores anonymity and the fact that few people question the source of statistics.  In the artwork the notion of anonymity is comprised as models wearing the T-shirts will be physically present. It becomes a game of decoding a seemingly aesthetic image as something with specific meaning, something to relate to, ponder or laugh at. By representing the statistics in a human key, I urge the viewer to make the connection between numbers and people
