The winner of this years Sasol New Signatures competition is Pretoria born artist, Cillie Malan. Malan was awarded the R60 000 cash prize for his video work titled Motsebetsi ya Motsho ’Black Labour’ (Supa Market).
Black Labour offers an interesting mixture of styles. Although the content and look is weighty, the work moves beyond repetition. True to the style of New Media art, the unconventional language use is sophisticated, while the work remains direct and accessible.
The two runner-up prizes was awarded to Gina Kraft and Rat Western. The judges were struck by the haunting and emotional beauty of Kraft’s performance art piece, Untitled, which has a relevance to the relationship between East and West today. Western’s video installation, Untitled, was praised for the sophisticated manner in which it explored themes of urban living.
Two merit awards were awarded to Angeline-Ann le Roux for her work titled A place called home and Olaf Bisschoff for his work titled CONTAIN.
The winning works were selected from 114 final entries forming part of the 2006 Sasol New Signatures Exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum. During the final phase the judges selected 12 finalists. Works were judged anonymously and individually, based on the use of material, quality of craftsmanship and skill as well as concept.
