Royal Visit

Alhyrian Laue

Created from an old rowing boat and the ceramic pieces of a lavatory as well as other found objects, this work is innovative, conceptual and flawlessly executed with high regard for detail and finish. A true respect for craftsmanship and media is evident throughout the work. The various found objects are seamlessly combined to form a water closet. The title, "Royal Visit" is strengthened by the found objects used, the boat, a lavatory and references to water. The human scale of the artwork invites the viewer to interact with it by peering through two doors of the 'closet' to find a kinetic pendulum suspended above a visible lavatory bowl underneath the sculpture. The artist attaches no meaning to the work and prefers the outcome to be open ended. Objects are selectively combined and result in the sum of the parts losing their inherent meaning to become something new and innovative. The crude reference to a sculpture referring to a lavatory and consisting of parts thereof is absorbed in a subtle play on puns and parodies. The overall result is an artwork which is cutting edge, contemporary and controversial.
